24 Hours in Plymouth.

Our assignment was to research a subject before heading to Plymouth on Tuesday, we had 24 hours to get there from Falmouth take our images, do editing such as colour correction and levels. Then to upload to the Cartel by midnight. I made it with an hour to go, it got pretty stressful in the end as i was panicking about metadata. My shoot was at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth the had a production in the main theatre of Avenue Q and in the Drum theatre of

A Voyage Round My Father - The Tamaritans

24 - 28 January 2012
Drum Theatre

A compelling and poignant story told with the charming comedy that made Rumpole of the Bailey such an international success.

This was the production i documented i contacted the costume department and they were happy for me to take photographs. I was then forwarded to Louise from press department who showed me around the theatre and was extremely helpful.

My shoot began at 2…and after an hour i had some images back stage, i had to meet the costume woman at 6. I then returned at 6 and met Mia who was working in props she was lovely and helped show me around the back stage area and all about props, it was her first time in the production and she believed in earning her place so was currently working backstage. I also met Nicola who designed the set for her final project at Plymouth university, she helped me gain access to one of the dressing rooms, to document some formal images.

After an hour the cast began to arrive and i was finally able to take some portraits however i was asked by some back stage members that i only had 15 more minutes and i still didn’t have my portraits and i felt stressed. I then was helped by Nicola to take an image of the women in the nurses costume. The directer then rudely told me i was upsetting people and i had to get out, he was not very pleasant. I politely replied thanking him for his time and went to the stage door, and got a taxi to the station back to Falmouth finally home where i belonged.

This shoot made me learn a lot of forward planning can get you great access and meet fantastic people, and also that you need to stay polite even when people upset you and are extremely rude towards you.

FLASHFLASHFLASH METZ.

Lets get this out the way. I hate flash. Or more the fact i hate being awful at something. Part of our requirement is that we nail this, we need to take an image of our subject using a metz. I personally prefer pushing film to a higher iso buuuuuuut flash it is for this.

The first image has been taken on 1/40 of a second, which is below being hand held eek! But i’m working it. Aperture 3.5 very shallow. But even in ambient light this works!

The second image was taken using a flash gun. Now the flash is meant to be set 2 stops below the camera or something, in fact i don’t know, i need practice, flash makes me panic. But my flash was on 5.6. It worked i don’t think it is right numbers and settings but i have a result to work from.

The flash in the second image brings out the details in the models coat and makes the image crisper and sharper.

But for now i NEED PRACTICE!

Part of being at Falmouth University is that becoming a documentary photographer has opened up some opportunities. On our course we work for an agency Cartel which has been set up through the university run by Ash (ashley@cartelphotos.com), through this means we can share, sell and just generally get some recognition for our work down here in Cornwall and other work we do outside of uni.

Project 12: Is Cartels well of being local, we are working with students in the community that are not lucky enough to have some of the equipment and opportunities along with facilities that we have in Falmouth uni. Over 12 weeks a group of Press and Editorial students are working with 6-8 students, from a variety of places in the community some as far as Newquay!

I was lucky enough out of all the applicants to be one of the fellow teachers, i’m so passionate about this project, i’m amazed at the facilities we have and was heart broken when i found out some of these students are doing photography at school and they simply just don’t have access to a camera. I realise how lucky i am to be here.

This week was just an introduction, showed them some inspiring photographers, and showed them the NIKONS they will be using for the duration of the course.

At the end of the 12 weeks there work will have been put in the ‘Local Packet’ paper and exhibited in the gallery in Falmouth University.

Today is more about thoughts, going home for christmas leaving Falmouth for a month, i don’t know if i want to. It never rains but it pours here, i find myself actually going outside into the rain and not moaning about it, it has this beauty this essence of calming and soothing, of course with the most spectacular rainbows. I got some work to do over christmas, i’m planning furiously now i need to document one man and one woman, in 4 different styles. I hope i can find something more interesting than eye-catching. We had an interesting talk from a guy called Harry who runs ‘HERE’ he told us, if i can already imagine the image then don’t take it as it has already been done, you need to think about a new angle on something. Once you have seen one protest you have seen them all ‘classicsignshootinserthereplease’.
The image i have put up is not the most amazing but the blurred lights and raindrops sums up life now, travelling around on buses and making new discoveries.

Paolo Patrizi Website

In Newquay recently was waiting for the bus on the way home and saw this wonderful sight of starlings swooping around in a large flock, i had a few frames left on my film camera, so had a go at snapping them. Although they were not in a large flock it was still a mesmerizing moment. In a morning meeting we were told about the importance of always having a camera on hand so you can capture an image. We were then shown a video of 2 girls on a small boat, when they also filmed starlings and it literally is one of the most amazing videos i have seen, i was caught in that moment. This photographer Paolo Patrizi was suggested to me to look at his work in Rome where he took images of starlings, he combined his images with an explanation of why the birds are in a flock like this, i found his work visually striking with interesting angles with the way he frames the birds within the trees in one image. The contrast between the blacks and whites is punchy it also makes you feel as though you can see the movement in the sky.

OMG! Freak out, my first re-blog!! This feels so amazing, just thought i would share it with the world, how sitting in your room thinking about life, snappin’n’pappin people can notice you. Also because of this re-blog i have some new follwers, i feel immense right now :)

This blog should really be on december 1st, but i had a extremely busy day and missed a days blogging! This is Kat a fellow photographer on the course, i documented her having her first tattoo, in Newquay at La familia. I also took two rolls at film for a back up of my person at work shoot. It was hard to switch off from being someones friend when photographing as i wanted her to have memories of the moment but also do my job. It was extremely difficult to photograph and i was limited to angles, i personally prefer the close ups and detail in the artists hands as they tell the story better.

Christmas is fast approaching, at university we had snow ball last night and this is my favourite image i took on my DSLR of Danni one of my close friends. I love the way the light highlighted her from above the softness and how beautiful it made her look. She naturally looked up into the chandler, i have another image of her looking at the camera but the composure is not as powerful. Within the image itself there is some soft focusing as i was using the built in flash and hoping for the best, but i feel it captured the moment, the ore of christmas and celebrations.

Polaroid. Out of date. Still perfection?
For my final Alevel project we had to use a range of materials such as Polaroid film to complete the project. These are a series of images from Falmouth when i came for my friends interview for art foundation, the film was already in the polaroid when my mum bought it so i have no idea how out of date it is.
These images not only helped me in my Journey project but made me realise that i wanted to apply to Falmouth university.
Dug these out today and it made me realise, i really do live in a beautiful part of the world.
